As Hindi cinema leans heavily into patriotic dramas, devotional stories and large-scale franchise films, Little Thomas is arriving as a smaller, more intimate alternative. The film, produced by Anurag Kashyap and directed by Kaushal Oza, is scheduled to reach theatres on October 23.
Kashyap recently argued that patriotic and devotional films have become so dominant in the current Hindi-film landscape that projects outside those lanes can struggle to get approved. His comments are an industry opinion, but they point to a question many filmmakers face: how much room is left for stories that are not designed around an established box-office formula?
A smaller film with a different pitch
Little Thomas features Gulshan Devaiah and Rasika Dugal, with child actor Hridansh Parekh in the titular role. Rather than selling itself as a spectacle, the film is positioned around family, everyday life and a child’s perspective. That gives it a different route to an audience from a star-driven action sequel or a large mythological production.
Smaller films often face a practical problem before reviews even arrive: visibility. They need enough showtimes and a clear reason for audiences to choose them amid louder marketing campaigns. A distinctive premise can help, but only if viewers hear about it and theatres give it a fair chance.
Is Bollywood narrowing its choices?
The recent success of big patriotic and devotional titles makes it understandable that studios want similar projects. Producers are managing real financial risks, and a recognisable genre can make a pitch easier to market. The downside is that a short-term trend can become a filter that screens out unusual scripts before audiences ever get to decide for themselves.
There is also a difference between saying one genre is popular and saying other genres cannot succeed. Audiences regularly respond to fresh ideas when the execution connects. The challenge is building a release strategy that allows those films to find their viewers rather than expecting every title to open like a blockbuster.
What to watch after release
For Little Thomas, the most useful early signals will be audience response, critical reaction and whether the film maintains screenings after its opening days. Its performance will not settle the debate over Hindi cinema, but it can add a real-world example to it.
Bottom line: Little Thomas is a reminder that the health of a film industry depends on more than a handful of dominant genres. Its October 23 release will test whether a quieter, character-led story can make its own space.
